Put a Spring In Your Step – Add Exercise to Your Daily Routine

All physical activity leads to a healthier heart, and lack of activity is one of the major modifiable risk factors for heart disease.  Studies show that even moderate levels of exercise can increase life expectancy and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Some of the benefits of daily physical activity include:

  • Reducing the risk of heart disease by improving blood circulation
  • Keeping weight under control
  • Improving blood cholesterol levels
  • Preventing and managing high blood pressure
  • Boosting energy level
  • Helping to manage stress and release tension

Tips on beginning an exercise program:

  • If you’ve been sedentary for a long time, are overweight, have a high risk of coronary heart disease or some other chronic health problem, see your doctor for a medical evaluation before beginning a physical activity program.
  • Start off slow and don’t overdo it.  If you push yourself too hard in the beginning, you’ll risk burnout.  Instead, start at a reasonable pace and work toward realistic goals.
  • Buddy up and ask a friend or family member to join you.  Involve your spouse, your kids, your neighbors or co-workers in your exercise program.
  • Make exercise a habit.  Add it to your list of other good habits you already practice like brushing your teeth and eating nutritious foods.

This information is consolidated from the American Heart Association’s web site information on fitness and heart health.

LTA Partnered With Peace Of Pizza To Feed The Homeless!

LTA partnered with Peace of Pizza to feed the Baltimore Homeless on Thanksgiving Day 2016!

On Thanksgiving Day 2016, LTA partnered with Peace of Pizza to feed Baltimore homeless.  We were fortunate to have the opportunity to feed over 250 people, provide over 25 cases of water and supply over 30 bags of clothing.  In addition, we were also able to deliver toiletries, toothpaste, ChapStick and crackers.  Over 25 volunteers participated in this rewarding experience. It was heartwarming to have the occasion to positively touch those in need.  Participating in this community service effort warms the heart and benefits everyone involved.

At LTA we strongly believe in helping those in need.  It is our mission to strengthen our community and improve lives by helping and connecting to others.

Featuring Guest Speaker:

Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

with MC Keith Mills, Sports Commentator

LTA’s Mission is to serve Baltimore area youth by providing programs and opportunities that encourage leadership and values development, enhance educational experiences, and promote health and fitness.

Mr. Brian White

President of Creative Print Group, INC

Dear Supporters of LTA,

Leadership Through Athletics continuously engages our community through athletic and educational programs. We have accomplished encouraging and remarkable work in our Lansdowne community. However, there is still work to be done and challenges that still remain in front of us. LTA’s mission is to maintain the legacy of Lansdowne making it great place to live and to develop today’s youth into tomorrow’s leaders.

The founders of LTA recognized a need for a community space that could help youth and adults come together in a positive constructive way to produce a better community. At LTA, we proudly serve our area seniors, adults and youth. We encourage leadership values and development, enhance educational experiences, promote health/fitness and we work to stabilize our Lansdowne community. The early-morning Weekday Walker program for seniors remains a success after more than 5 years. We continue to grow and strengthen our Mentoring program where coaches chose our gym as their home facility to develop and guide our youth. Open seven days a week, LTA offers batting cages for hitting and pitching practice, the multi-purpose room for meetings, birthday parties and church seminars.

Now more than ever, we need to provide our youth a safe, peaceful and loving environment. The too-frequent stories of violence in our country have us on edge and we all feel better knowing our youth and seniors have a place to escape. It’s comforting to know that LTA provides our youth in Lansdowne with a friendly place to build positive relationships while nurturing their strengths, interests and abilities.

However, we cannot accomplish our goals without your help. While we have a team of dedicated volunteers and staff, our work depends on public support, and every contribution makes an enormous impact. We seek to acquire funding to support our many programs and enhance our facilities. Whether you can offer a few dollars or a larger gift, please consider making a contribution to Leadership Through Athletics Inc. You might also consider purchasing a sponsorship for our sixth annual Night of Leadership, which honors local businessmen and women for their commitment to our community. This event will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at our LTA facility.

We would like thank all our supporters, donors and volunteers for results we can all be proud of. We are enthusiastic about our future. Michael, Patrick and Tommy Grace join the Board of Directors and myself in wishing you a happy and healthy completion to 2016.

Brian White

President, LTA Executive Committee

LTA Board Member

The Honorable Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. is senior counsel in the Government Advocacy and Public Policy practice group at King & Spalding. He advises clients on a broad array of policy matters and their interactions with the federal government. Having served as Governor, U.S. Congressman, state legislator, and civil litigator, he counsels clients on an array of government matters, with particular expertise in health care, finance and economic development.

As Maryland’s first Republican Governor in 36 years when elected in 2002, he improved Maryland’s fiscal condition by turning $4 billion in inherited budget deficits into $2.3 billion in surpluses.  His pro-growth economic policies helped create 100,000 new private sector jobs.  He is an advocate for Maryland’s world-renown technology economy, enacting policies that positioned Maryland as a national leader in education, biotechnology, health care, and minority business advancement. He made record investments in public schools and authored Maryland’s first public charter schools law, enabling more than 7,000 students to attend 30 new public charter schools. He doubled funding for need-based college scholarships, helping college enrollment reach an all-time high.

Governor Ehrlich authored the historic Chesapeake Bay Restoration Act to restore America’s largest estuary. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation called it, “the most important environmental achievement in twenty years.

Governor Ehrlich launched construction on 123 statewide transportation projects in four years, and managed the most successful military base realignment and closure strategy in the nation.  He toughened penalties for sex offenders, drunk driving, and witness intimidation and established Maryland’s first Office of Homeland Security.

Governor Ehrlich earned national commendation for empowering individuals with disabilities.  He created the nation’s first cabinet-level Department of Disabilities, for which he earned the “Highest Recognition Award” from the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, among other awards.

Prior to serving as Governor, Congressman Ehrlich won four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.  In Congress, he served as a member of the House Majority Whip team, wherein he helped pass comprehensive tax relief, greater access to health care, federal education reform, and the first balanced budget in a generation.

He also served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1986 to 1994, representing Baltimore County.  He served on the House Judiciary Committee and was instrumental in shaping state policy on tort reform, juvenile justice, and child abuse and neglect.

Prior to running for public office, Ehrlich was associated with the Baltimore law firm of Ober, Kaler, Grimes and Shriver, where he practiced civil litigation for eleven years.  He served as a founding Member and Partner at the law firm Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC in Baltimore.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Politics from Princeton University in 1979, where he captained the freshman and varsity football teams, and his Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University in 1982.

Governor Ehrlich has been recognized on many occasions for his outstanding public service including in 2009, when he became one of a handful of U.S. Citizens to receive the Order of Diplomatic Service award from the Government of Korea.

LTA Founder, Pat Grace, Honored with the UPS Jim Casey Community Service Award!

This year one of our LTA Founders, Pat Grace, was honored with the UPS Jim Casey Community Service Award. One UPS employee is selected to be given this award each year and it is the highest honor a UPS employee can achieve. As a result UPS donated $10,000 to our LTA Mission. It is an honor to receive this type of recognition, not only for Pat, but also for our LTA Mission. LTA would like to thank UPS for all the positive words of encouragement and favorable recognition.

The video UPS created about LTA was distributed to all UPS employees. We wanted to share the video with you in hopes you will watch our story.
