CAMP GRACE 2017 – 12th Summer at LTA

Camp Grace is back for the 12th summer at LTA!  Our focus at Camp Grace is to educate our kids on leadership and basketball! We center our camp around friendship, teamwork, commitment, excellence and leadership.  Activities include the fundamentals of basketball, shooting, in-house games and scrimmages.

This year we are thrilled to add two new instructors to Camp Grace, Damien Jenifer of First Choice Basketball Training and Conditioning and Bear (Cornelius McMurray) of Gooseneck Basketball.

Damien is the owner and operator of First choice Basketball Training and Conditioning, has provided mental preparation and programs designed to address the goals and needs for individual players. In his 7 years as an Assistant Coach for the nationally renowned Montrose Christian Mustangs boys basketball program, Damien has developed a solid foundation of teamwork in practice, workouts, and games. He is focused on individual players, and creating a customized program to maximize development and career enhancement. Damien has helped to train over 35 college basketball players and numerous NBA and European Professional Basketball players.

Bear (Cornelius McMurray) heavily contributed to the 27-0 season for Southwestern high school in 1997 winning west Baltimore’s first ever city and regional championship.  He currently holds the record for most three pointers in Baltimore city at ten. Bear attended Bacone Junior College in Oklahoma during the 1998-99 season where he assisted his team to a record of 32-2 and won their first ever conference and regional championship.  He finished out his collegiate career with a dominate presence at Bowie State University.  He helped lead Bowie State in capturing the CIAA championship in the 2003-2004 season. Bear was inducted into the AAU Hall of Fame in 2003 and was recently inducted into Bowie State’s Hall of Fame in 2016.  With these accolades he is a proven champ and ready to pass the torch to the next generation!

On behalf of LTA, we would like to thank Damien and Bear for their commitment to our youth and our community! They both selflessly volunteer their time for our children.  We are very proud to have both Damien and Bear at Camp Grace!

Players “Tee’d” it up “Fore” LTA at our 10th Annual Golf Tournament!

Thanks to all our Participants, Sponsors and Volunteers for Teeing it up for LTA at our 10th Annual Golf Tournament

The 10th Annual Leadership Through Athletics Golf Tournament was held Monday, May 1, 2017 at the gorgeous Chartwell Golf and Country Club in Severna Park, Maryland.  Chartwell is well known for being one of the top golf courses in Maryland. We would like to thank Chartwell for their firm belief and unwavering support of our LTA mission!

A special thank you to our tournament committee members, Mike and Kelsey Grace, Ms. Kate, Dr. Tom and Tom Lynott. Their hard work and efforts made this year’s tournament a huge success.  We welcome any new volunteers who would like to “chip in” and join the committee. We need your help to start planning for next year’s tournament.  Year after year our volunteers enjoy this rewarding experience because the grass is always greener on the golf course!

A big thank you to all of our participants and sponsors! This is an important event for LTA and it goes a long way in helping with the annual operating budget. Your participation makes this tournament possible.

Again this year, we would like to thank Bob Bell Ford for sponsoring hole number #8.  Bob Bell graciously offered a beautiful Ford Mustang for any participant making a hole in one on #8! In fact, Scott Barhight caused some major excitement when he came within two inches of winning this brand new car!

We would like to congratulate the following tournament winners! Ashton Bird, Matt Dalbke, Alan Funk and David Damal Ouji from Maryland Glass took first place.  Chuck Gartrell and Beau Higginbotham from St. Agnes finished in 2nd place.  Coming in 3rd place was Ted Nisson, Adam Radford, Jeff Shook and Ray Tignall from Chesapeake. Closest to the Pin on Hole #4 was Jim Wolf of H&D Mechanical.  Longest Drive on Hole #10 was also Jim Wolf of H&D Mechanical. Putting Contest Winner was James Middleton.

Thank you again to our generous sponsors, participants and volunteers.  Without all of you, none of this would be achievable.  We are grateful for your support of LTA and our community!

In the very near future, we will be sending out a note to all who attended.  Thank you again to everyone!

LTA partners with the Poole and Kent Corporation and Ferguson Plumbing for a Landscape Spring Cleaning Day

This past Saturday, April 22, 2017, two local companies hosted and participated in a SPRING CLEAN UP day at LTA!  It’s that time of year when we like to clean and freshen up our landscape.  Ferguson Plumbing and the Poole & Kent Corporation joined forces with LTA to give our landscape some much needed TLC!  We pruned and trimmed trees, removed debris, cleaned out flower beds and mulched the entire property.

Over 20 participants from Ferguson Plumbing, Poole & Kent Corporation and LTA participated in the clean up day that was held from 7:30am – 2:00pm.  We estimated approximately 100 labor hours from volunteers participating in this clean up after old man winter.  Ferguson Plumbing and Poole and Kent volunteers worked hard despite fighting the rain all morning!  Ferguson also fed the entire group hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill! It was a great treat for everyone!

A quote from Dr. Tom Grace, LTA Co-Founder said, “ we continue to be inspired by the commitment of our local companies that support our mission. We all worked hard on Saturday. It was a very rewarding day especially considering we had the opportunity to spruce up the appearance of our LTA facility.”

We would like to extend a BIG thank you to all the volunteers for coming out and making this day a huge success!  We would also like to thank Ferguson Plumbing and the Poole and Kent Corporation for their commitment to LTA and their participation in this terrific event!

“Cops & Kids” at LTA was a HUGE success!

On Saturday, March 25, 2017, LTA partnered with Cops and Kids and an excellent time was had by all!  We had a great turnout and the event was a huge success! The participants received basketball tips and know how from the police officers, played on state-of-the-art basketball courts, had a three hour workout and developed their skills in teamwork! The children also learned more about the police officers who work in their neighborhoods. It was a fantastic opportunity for the police officers and children to interact with each other in a positive nurturing environment.

Feedback from the event:

  • Local high school junior, Bailie said, “ The kids loved it. I think these type of clinics build a good deal of trust between our “Cops and Kids”. Great to see this happening at LTA.
  • Local 4th grader, Chuck said, “Today was awesome! I hope they do this again over the summer”.
  • LTA staff member, Don Granger said,  “ It is exciting and encouraging to see our local law enforcement working together with our community. I love watching the relationships develop”
  • LTA Founder, Mike Grace said, “This event serves our mission to the community. We hope to sponsor more events like this, which will provide us the opportunity to nurture the cops and kids relationships in our neighborhood. A big THANK YOU to our Baltimore County Police Department.”
  • LTA Founder, Dr. Tom Grace said, “This was an exciting event to be a part of.  Observing our Baltimore County Police Department mentoring our neighborhood children demonstrates their commitment to our community.  We look forward to hosting this event 2-3 times each year. The Baltimore County Police Department is always welcome in our facility.”

Put a Spring In Your Step – Add Exercise to Your Daily Routine

All physical activity leads to a healthier heart, and lack of activity is one of the major modifiable risk factors for heart disease.  Studies show that even moderate levels of exercise can increase life expectancy and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Some of the benefits of daily physical activity include:

  • Reducing the risk of heart disease by improving blood circulation
  • Keeping weight under control
  • Improving blood cholesterol levels
  • Preventing and managing high blood pressure
  • Boosting energy level
  • Helping to manage stress and release tension

Tips on beginning an exercise program:

  • If you’ve been sedentary for a long time, are overweight, have a high risk of coronary heart disease or some other chronic health problem, see your doctor for a medical evaluation before beginning a physical activity program.
  • Start off slow and don’t overdo it.  If you push yourself too hard in the beginning, you’ll risk burnout.  Instead, start at a reasonable pace and work toward realistic goals.
  • Buddy up and ask a friend or family member to join you.  Involve your spouse, your kids, your neighbors or co-workers in your exercise program.
  • Make exercise a habit.  Add it to your list of other good habits you already practice like brushing your teeth and eating nutritious foods.

This information is consolidated from the American Heart Association’s web site information on fitness and heart health.
