LTA and “Peace A Pizza” served the Homeless on Thanksgiving Day

LTA and “Peace A Pizza” served the Baltimore Homeless on Thanksgiving Day

On Thanksgiving Day 2017, LTA and “Peace A Pizza” teamed together to feed the Baltimore homeless and hungry. For the 12th year in a row LTA was blessed with the opportunity to provide a holiday meal to those in need. Thanks to our great volunteers we were able to feed over 225 people, provide over 20 cases of water and supply over 25 bags of clothing.  In addition, we were able to assist with basic needs such as toiletries, and snacks. Over 25 volunteers partook in this rewarding and gratifying experience to provide assistance to those less fortunate. Participating in this community service effort warmed the heart and benefited everyone involved as serving others is one of life’s greatest privileges.

“Peace A Pizza” in Catonsville has something for everyone including pizzas, salads and stromboli and is located on:

Lansdowne Community Benefits when Gooseneck Basketball partners with Baltimore County Police to offer sports clinic at LTA!

Lansdowne Community Benefits when Gooseneck Basketball partners with Baltimore County Police to offer sports clinic at LTA!

Community kids participated in a back to school basketball clinic and learned more than just basketball skills.  They learned about teamwork, leadership and our men and women in blue.  More than 100 kids had a great time running, shooting hoops and sharpening their basketball skills at the clinic. The Baltimore County Police Department and Gooseneck basketball teamed with LTA to offer kids this incredible sports experience.  The lessons they learned were invaluable.

“Now, more than ever, it is important for kids to have the chance to interact with law enforcement officers in a positive setting and to see them as role models,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.

The purpose of the program is to allow community members, particularly young people, to interact with police officers in a positive setting. “Both our police officers and our communities are safer when officers and residents know and trust each other,” said Kamenetz.

“We were excited to work with the Baltimore County Police Department and Gooseneck Basketball to bring this excellent opportunity to LTA. It was great to see the young people and police officers interact in a positive nurturing environment” said LTA Co-Founder Pat Grace.

Cornelius (Bear) McMurray founder of Gooseneck Basketball has made it his mission to teach kids life lessons, leadership and teamwork on the court.  “Cornelius (Bear) also helps young people discover and explore their talents and interests while developing their basketball skills,” said LTA Co-Founder Mike Grace.

This back to school basketball clinic was co-hosted by Leadership through Athletics (LTA) as a follow-up to a very well received Cops and Kids clinic last spring.  “The clinics were very rewarding for the kids, the cops and the community,” said Kirk Krikstan, LTA’s General Manager.  We look forward to offering more clinics similar to this one at LTA.

A big thank you to the Baltimore County Police Department and Gooseneck Basketball for bringing this fantastic experience to LTA!

Key Note Speaker for the 7th Annual LTA Night of Leadership!

7th Annual LTA Night of Leadership

Please join us this October 26, 2017 for our 7th annual Night of Leadership. We are thrilled to announce this year’s key note speaker will be Sister Mary Jo McGinley, RSM.

Key Note Speaker:

Sr. Mary Jo McGinley, RSM

October 26, 2017

6:00pm– 8:00pm

With creativity, leadership and passionate commitment, Sr. Mary Jo McGinley is improving the lives and health of thousands who are poor and vulnerable in Peru, Guatemala, Jamaica and Haiti. And along the way, she is creating opportunities for volunteers to serve and be formed by the process.

Sr. Mary Jo McGinley, RSM serves as the executive director of Global Health Ministry at Catholic Health East. Sr. Mary Jo leads a team of dedicated, valiant volunteers who side by side with their in-country partners, provide medical and surgical health care and education for the poorest of the poor. In Peru, she joined with local community leaders to create the Madre y Nino program in three regions of the Andes where maternal/infant deaths were the highest in the country. Within three years, the program resulted in a 50 percent reduction in the death rate.

In Chulucanas, Sr. Mary Jo helped develop the diocesan health care and education department, Centro Pastoral, which serves the poor of the community daily. Technical advice and financial support from Global Health Ministry has greatly improved the health status of the community. Sr. Mary Jo’s creativity and execution of ideas and requests from the community transformed what was once a field hospital into a fully functioning community hospital with three new operating rooms and a large emergency care suite.

In Haiti, she is helping modernize Alma Mater Hospital. Along with local leaders, she is leading a feasibility study to assess the capacity of the infrastructure to care for surgical patients and to develop a strategic plan for long-term development and sustainability.

Under her leadership, the Global Health Ministry orientation and training program for volunteers creates lifetime givers conscious of the interdependence of people around the world. Judith Persichilli, president and CEO of Catholic Health East, says, “Sr. Mary Jo envisions a world better than the present for all those Global Health Ministry serves. She inspires others to see that same world and motivates hundreds of individuals to follow her lead into countries and communities far distant than the world they come from, and along the way, she changes their view of the world as well.”
